I have always been active, from fitness classes and the gym to dancing and gymnastics. When I had my first baby, I expected to feel strong again quickly. Instead, I was shocked by how disconnected my body felt. I remember lying on my sofa trying a simple core exercise and realising I could not connect to those muscles at all. I started crying.
When I began feeling stronger, I pushed too hard and trained the way I always had before. I developed lower back and hip pain almost immediately, because the connection still was not there even though I was acting like it was.
With my second child, I did things differently. I slowed down, I focused on my breath, I worked with my body instead of against it. My recovery was completely different, no pain, real strength, and a sense of being at home in my body again.
